Optimisation is exploring the parameters of design within certain criteria to ensure the final design is the best it can be. Whether it is your design, our design or a 3rd party's design; or a gearbox, bearing or drivetrain design, we can review and optimise to ensure your product meets your criteria as closely as possible.
Your optimisation criteria may be technical, manufacturing or certification – but whatever they are you can be assured your expectations will be exceeded.
To truly optimise a wind turbine gearbox, bearing or drivetrain design we rationalise each design decision from the initial concept. We also understand the importance of taking into account all of the influences that affect the success of the final product, particularly manufacturing tolerances and capabilities. We strive to achieve the perfect balance between the design possibilities and the manufacturing realities.
Optimisation is one of the most effective tools in product development – ensuring a balance between design possibilities and manufacturing realities. For our clients it means design confidence.

To successfully review a design, we ask questions of every element of product development:
Concept
Is the concept chosen the best of the options available and is it the best fit to the customer’s requirements?
Detailed design
What is the effect of detailed design changes such as component size and positioning?
Structures
Are housings and carriers supporting performance and meeting weight requirements?
Manufacturing tolerances
Can the design be successfully realised by the manufacturer in a cost effective way?
Reliability and durability
The mantra we repeat throughout the Romax design process is reliability and durability, and when optimising a design the mantra doesn’t change. A customer often has additional requirements for design optimisation, and it’s understanding the balance between these requirements – and getting them right – that ensures Romax is a reliable partner for design optimisation.
Optimisation techniques – using RomaxWIND
Supported by RomaxWIND, our virtual product development and simulation platform, our design teams can review and optimise your system effectively and quickly. Our innovative simulation platform has unique optimisation methods that allow component and system variations to be modelled, analysed and compared, ensuring confidence in your design choices. For more information on our simulation environment, please see the RomaxWIND section of this website.
RomaxWIND – a solid baseline
A reliable product is born from a robust design. Errors in design, inaccurate modelling or tolerance assumptions that are too broad are some of the factors that can lead to a low quality design.RomaxWIND is able to model and simulate robust models from day 1 of the design process, meaning that optimisation techniques will be effective and will increase the robustness of your gearbox. See Design Services and RomaxWIND sections of this website.
Unless you have an accurately simulated model, you cannot effectively and reliably optimise a design. Inaccuracies can lead to poor optimisation and in many cases less reliable and less durable gearboxes.
