| 5th European Technology Conference, 24 & 25 September, Warwick, UK
We are pleased to announce that our 5th European Technology Conference will take place in September 2008 in Warwick, UK. This event builds upon the success of last year's technology conference in Cologne. The theme of this year's conference is 'saving energy through efficient design, analysis and optimisation'. Call for presentations is now open!
Topics
'Saving energy through efficient design, analysis and optimisation includes the following related tracks:
-
Cross-industry
-
Wind energy
-
Transportation
Keynote Speakers
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Berthold Schlecht of the IMM - Institut für Maschinenelemente und Maschinenkonstruktion at the Technical University of
Dresden will be delivering a keynote speech titled, Dimensioning of Drive Systems and Their Components on the Basis of Accurate Dynamic Load Calculation'.
The main field of research activities of the Institute of Machine Elements and Machine Design (IMM) at TU Dresden covers both the
fundamental research in modelling strategies for complex drive systems using the Multibody System Simulation (MBS) and the development of detailed calculation methods for Machine
Elements like shafts, bearings, helical und spur gears as well as bevel gears and planetary gears with the main focus on large industrial drive applications of several megawatt
power output.
Especially for such large drive systems it could be observed that very often machine elements fail although they have been
dimensioned correctly due to wrongly assumed load situations. In nearly every case the main reasons for the damages were high dynamic loads resulting from unfavourable operating
conditions or oscillations on account of the excitation of unknown natural frequencies that have not been determined during the design process. Therefore a dynamic-load-adequate
dimensioning requires firstly the exactly knowledge of natural frequencies and possible excitation frequencies to avoid resonances during operation and secondly the realistic
determination of all dynamic loads with regard to amplitude and number of load cycles.
For both cases the MBS in combination with Finite-Element-Models to take into account elastic effects of the surrounding of
the drive train is the right choice, especially if it is impossible to measure the acting loads on an existing drive system. The state-of-the-art of this calculation method
will be demonstrated for the drive systems of wind turbines, cement mills, ships, locomotives, laddle cranes and underground mining equipment.
Additionally it will be shown that it is also possible to use measured data from a few measuring points in combination with
a fully detailed MBS-model to determine the interesting loads for every machine element inside the drive train.
